The detention centre, which had about 10,000 people when it opened in February 2015, came under scrutiny from Australian media after PNG Senator Ian Macdonald said he and his colleague would quit if the facility was closed.
On Monday the Immigration Department announced the final site for the detention centre would be a former Army barracks at Maribyrnong, off the coast of Queensland.
“The decision to build an outdoor facility on the Maribyrnong site is a positive step for the future of the Maribyrnong facility and the safety of Australian families seeking protection,” Mr Morrison said.
