Police predict hefty shopping centre fire bill: $1.3 million
Sandy Mills has been ranked as one of the hottest shopping centres in the GTA and has seen sales rise from $300,000 in 2013 to over $2 million by November 2017.
The city’s chief planner says the shopping centre’s booming revenue was due to “over the past year or so, a lot of infrastructure projects in and around the area”.

Miller says Sandy’s growth can also be attributed to the city’s “new style” shopping centre which opened in 2014.
“It allows people to be in the shopping area and they’re still in the main building and they can still shop there, you can still go in to the main building and you can come out and get something and you’re at the mall.”
The $1.3 million in 2017 tax bill to finance the new building includes more than $3.5 million to repair the old main shopping centre’s floodlights.
Mayor Rob Ford won re-election to a second term and the new tax has been put aside for the infrastructure project and for additional housing.
As part of the $11.6 million expansion of the main shopping centre, $8 million was committed to building a new $10 million store.
“I think we want to keep that money here so that we can use that to provide the best possible product and services for the community so that people come back every single year to see it for how good it is,” said Miller.
