In Venice, demonstrators clashed with police with stones lobbed, bottles thrown and smashed glass on the streets of the Italian city.

In Torino, riot police used tear gas and metal bats to clear a march from a local bar, the Associated Press reported, citing a riot police spokesman, Raffaele Cassarini.

Trento, a city close to Rome that went into a state of emergency, said it had received 400 complaints of “unstable or threatening people”. A police spokeswoman said the number was only 400.
